Continue Kyrene Excellence!

January 5, 2010

How
On March 9, please vote YES on the Kyrene Budget Override Continuation.

Why
Your vote will simply continue existing funding levels.  These funds help Kyrene pay for:  lower class sizes, math coaches, teacher training, support for computer, arts, and elective programs in both elementary and middle schools — all the things that make Kyrene the great district it is today.

Will it raise my taxes?
NO. This is a property tax that you are already paying.  Your YES vote will continue the existing support levels; it will NOT add any new taxes.

How much is it costing me?
Average cost:  $129/year
(Based on the average (2008/09 assessed valuation) home in the district:  $298,270.)

More Information

 What if it doesn’t pass?
The existing override will phase out and the schools will have to cut programs like music, art, computers and Spanish.  Class sizes will increase even more than they are now with the current legislative cuts.

$12.4 million, or 15% of the budget, will make a big impact on

  • the quality our children’s education,
  • local  property values, and
  • the quality of our future economy.

By the Numbers
According to the Auditor General’s report, KSD spends about 64% of the M&O budget in the classroom. (KSD puts dollars into the classroom better than just about every other school district in Arizona.)    64% of  $12.4 million equates to about 140 teachers.  (5 fewer teachers / el school)

Without the override, that could lead to up to 8 more students in classrooms.
